2016 TAFPRS Annual Meeting

Classically, surgical management of the facial skeleton had been divided among oral surgery, plastic surgery, and otolaryngology. Each specialty has taken facial skeletal surgery to great heights, with oral surgeons focusing on “bite” (occlusion), plastic surgeons on “beauty” (face), and otolaryngologists on “breathing” (airway). Nevertheless, movement of the maxillofacial skeleton always affects the patient’s occlusion, facial balance, and airway stability in concert. Let’s begin a dialogue to combine each specialty’s experience, with the goal of designing patient-specific facial skeletal operations to balance “bite, beauty, and breathing.”
